1:1 Now the word of Yahweh came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 1 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 1 主の言葉がアミッタイの子ヨナに臨んで言った、      
1:2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.” 2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. 2 「立って、あの大きな町ニネベに行き、これに向かって呼ばわれ。彼らの悪がわたしの前に上ってきたからである」。
1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. 3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. 3 しかしヨナは主の前を離れてタルシシへのがれようと、立ってヨッパに下って行った。ところがちょうど、タルシシへ行く船があったので、船賃を払い、主の前を離れて、人々と共にタルシシへ行こうと船に乗った。
1:4 But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up. 4 But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. 4 時に、主は大風を海の上に起されたので、船が破れるほどの激しい暴風が海の上にあった。
1:5 Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and he was laying down, and was fast asleep. 5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. 5 それで水夫たちは恐れて、めいめい自分の神を呼び求め、また船を軽くするため、その中の積み荷を海に投げ捨てた。しかし、ヨナは船の奥に下り、伏して熟睡していた。
1:6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.” 6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. 6 そこで船長は来て、彼に言った、「あなたはどうして眠っているのか。起きて、あなたの神に呼ばわりなさい。神があるいは、われわれを顧みて、助けてくださるだろう」。
1:7 They all said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. 7 やがて人々は互に言った、「この災がわれわれに臨んだのは、だれのせいか知るために、さあ、くじを引いてみよう」。そして彼らが、くじを引いたところ、くじはヨナに当った。
1:8 Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?” 8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? 8 そこで人々はヨナに言った、「この災がだれのせいで、われわれに臨んだのか、われわれに告げなさい。あなたの職業は何か。あなたはどこから来たのか。あなたの国はどこか。あなたはどこの民か」。
1:9 He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.” 9 And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. 9 ヨナは彼らに言った、「わたしはヘブルびとです。わたしは海と陸とをお造りになった天の神、主を恐れる者です」。
1:10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What is this that you have done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them. 10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him. Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. 10 そこで人々ははなはだしく恐れて、彼に言った、「あなたはなんたる事をしてくれたのか」。人々は彼がさきに彼らに告げた事によって、彼が主の前を離れて、のがれようとしていた事を知っていたからである。
1:11 Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy. 11 Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. 11 人々は彼に言った、「われわれのために海が静まるには、あなたをどうしたらよかろうか」。それは海がますます荒れてきたからである。
1:12 He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.” 12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you. 12 ヨナは彼らに言った、「わたしを取って海に投げ入れなさい。そうしたら海は、あなたがたのために静まるでしょう。わたしにはよくわかっています。この激しい暴風があなたがたに臨んだのは、わたしのせいです」。
1:13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them. 13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them. 13 しかし人々は船を陸にこぎもどそうとつとめたが、成功しなかった。それは海が彼らに逆らって、いよいよ荒れたからである。
1:14 Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.” 14 Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee. 14 そこで人々は主に呼ばわって言った、「主よ、どうぞ、この人の生命のために、われわれを滅ぼさないでください。また罪なき血を、われわれに帰しないでください。主よ、これはみ心に従って、なされた事だからです」。
1:15 So they took up Jonah, and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging. 15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. 15 そして彼らはヨナを取って海に投げ入れた。すると海の荒れるのがやんだ。
1:16 Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh, and made vows. 16 Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows. 16 そこで人々は大いに主を恐れ、犠牲を主にささげて、誓願を立てた。
1:17 Yahweh prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. & 17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. 17 主は大いなる魚を備えて、ヨナをのませられた。ヨナは三日三夜その魚の腹の中にいた。

2:1 Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh, his God, out of the fish’s belly. 1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, 1 ヨナは魚の腹の中からその神、主に祈って、
2:2 He said, “I called because of my affliction to Yahweh.He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried.You heard my voice. 2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. 2 言った、「わたしは悩みのうちから主に呼ばわると、主はわたしに答えられた。わたしが陰府の腹の中から叫ぶと、あなたはわたしの声を聞かれた。
2:3 For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas.The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me. 3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. 3 あなたはわたしを淵の中、海のまん中に投げ入れられた。大水はわたしをめぐり、あなたの波と大波は皆、わたしの上を越えて行った。
2:4 I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’ 4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. 4 わたしは言った、『わたしはあなたの前から追われてしまった、どうして再びあなたの聖なる宮を望みえようか』。
2:5 The waters surrounded me, even to the soul.The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head. 5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. 5 水がわたしをめぐって魂にまでおよび、淵はわたしを取り囲み、海草は山の根元でわたしの頭にまといついた。
2:6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever: yet have you brought up my life from the pit, Yahweh my God. 6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. 6 わたしは地に下り、地の貫の木はいつもわたしの上にあった。しかしわが神、主よ、あなたはわが命を穴から救いあげられた。
2:7 “When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple. 7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. 7 わが魂がわたしのうちに弱っているとき、わたしは主をおぼえ、わたしの祈はあなたに至り、あなたの聖なる宮に達した。
2:8 Those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy. 8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. 8 むなしい偶像に心を寄せる者は、そのまことの忠節を捨てる。
2:9 But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving.I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to Yahweh.” 9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. 9 しかしわたしは感謝の声をもって、あなたに犠牲をささげ、わたしの誓いをはたす。救は主にある」。
2:10 Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land. & 10 And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. 10 主は魚にお命じになったので、魚はヨナを陸に吐き出した。

3:1 The word of Yahweh came to Jonah the second time, saying, 1 And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, 1 時に主の言葉は再びヨナに臨んで言った、
3:2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you.” 2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. 2 「立って、あの大きな町ニネベに行き、あなたに命じる言葉をこれに伝えよ」。
3:3 So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey across. 3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey. 3 そこでヨナは主の言葉に従い、立って、ニネベに行った。ニネベは非常に大きな町であって、これを行きめぐるには、三日を要するほどであった。
3:4 Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried out, and said, “In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!” 4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. 4 ヨナはその町にはいり、初め一日路を行きめぐって呼ばわり、「四十日を経たらニネベは滅びる」と言った。
3:5 The people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. 5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. 5 そこでニネベの人々は神を信じ、断食をふれ、大きい者から小さい者まで荒布を着た。
3:6 The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 6 このうわさがニネベの王に達すると、彼はその王座から立ち上がり、朝服を脱ぎ、荒布をまとい、灰の中に座した。
3:7 He made a proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, “Let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water; 7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: 7 また王とその大臣の布告をもって、ニネベ中にふれさせて言った、「人も獣も牛も羊もみな、何をも味わってはならない。物を食い、水を飲んではならない。
3:8 but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and animal, and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way, and from the violence that is in his hands. 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. 8 人も獣も荒布をまとい、ひたすら神に呼ばわり、おのおのその悪い道およびその手にある強暴を離れよ。
3:9 Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?” 9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? 9 あるいは神はみ心をかえ、その激しい怒りをやめて、われわれを滅ぼされないかもしれない。だれがそれを知るだろう」。
3:10 God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. God relented of the disaster which he said he would do to them, and he didn’t do it. 10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. 10 神は彼らのなすところ、その悪い道を離れたのを見られ、彼らの上に下そうと言われた災を思いかえして、これをおやめになった。

4:1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. 1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry. 1 ところがヨナはこれを非常に不快として、激しく怒り、
4:2 He prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Please, Yahweh, wasn’t this what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you relent of doing harm. 2 And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil. 2 主に祈って言った、「主よ、わたしがなお国におりました時、この事を申したではありませんか。それでこそわたしは、急いでタルシシにのがれようとしたのです。なぜなら、わたしはあなたが恵み深い神、あわれみあり、怒ることおそく、いつくしみ豊かで、災を思いかえされることを、知っていたからです。
4:3 Therefore now, Yahweh, take, I beg you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.” 3 Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live. 3 それで主よ、どうぞ今わたしの命をとってください。わたしにとっては、生きるよりも死ぬ方がましだからです」。
4:4 Yahweh said, “Is it right for you to be angry?” 4 Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry? 4 主は言われた、「あなたの怒るのは、よいことであろうか」。
4:5 Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a booth, and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city. 5 So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city. 5 そこでヨナは町から出て、町の東の方に座し、そこに自分のために一つの小屋を造り、町のなりゆきを見きわめようと、その下の日陰にすわっていた。
4:6 Yahweh God prepared a vine, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine. 6 And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd. 6 時に主なる神は、ヨナを暑さの苦痛から救うために、とうごまを備えて、それを育て、ヨナの頭の上に日陰を設けた。ヨナはこのとうごまを非常に喜んだ。
4:7 But God prepared a worm at dawn the next day, and it chewed on the vine, so that it withered. 7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered. 7 ところが神は翌日の夜明けに虫を備えて、そのとうごまをかませられたので、それは枯れた。
4:8 It happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.” 8 And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live. 8 やがて太陽が出たとき、神が暑い東風を備え、また太陽がヨナの頭を照したので、ヨナは弱りはて、死ぬことを願って言った、「生きるよりも死ぬ方がわたしにはましだ」。
4:9 God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?” He said, “I am right to be angry, even to death.” 9 And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death. 9 しかし神はヨナに言われた、「とうごまのためにあなたの怒るのはよくない」。ヨナは言った、「わたしは怒りのあまり狂い死にそうです」。
4:10 Yahweh said, “You have been concerned for the vine, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night. 10 Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: 10 主は言われた、「あなたは労せず、育てず、一夜に生じて、一夜に滅びたこのとうごまをさえ、惜しんでいる。
4:11 Shouldn’t I be concerned for Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who can’t discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much livestock?” 11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more then sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle? 11 ましてわたしは十二万あまりの、右左をわきまえない人々と、あまたの家畜とのいるこの大きな町ニネベを、惜しまないでいられようか」。
