1 This is a faithful saying: if a man seeks the office of an overseer, he desires a good work. 1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 3:1 「もし人が監督の職を望むなら、それは良い仕事を願うことである」とは正しい言葉である。
2 The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching; 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3:2 さて、監督は、非難のない人で、ひとりの妻の夫であり、自らを制し、慎み深く、礼儀正しく、旅人をもてなし、よく教えることができ、
3 not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 3:3 酒を好まず、乱暴でなく、寛容であって、人と争わず、金に淡泊で、
4 one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence; 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 3:4 自分の家をよく治め、謹厳であって、子供たちを従順な者に育てている人でなければならない。
5 (but if a man doesn't know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the assembly of God?) 5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 3:5 自分の家を治めることも心得ていない人が、どうして神の教会を預かることができようか。
6 not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 3:6 彼はまた、信者になって間もないものであってはならない。そうであると、高慢になって、悪魔と同じ審判を受けるかも知れない。

11 Their wives in the same way must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 3:11 女たちも、同様に謹厳で、他人をそしらず、自らを制し、すべてのことに忠実でなければならない。

15 but if I wait long, that you may know how men ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 3:15 万一わたしが遅れる場合には、神の家でいかに生活すべきかを、あなたに知ってもらいたいからである。神の家というのは、生ける神の教会のことであって、それは真理の柱、真理の基礎なのである。
16 Without controversy, the mystery of godliness is great: God was revealed in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, and received up in glory. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. 3:16 確かに偉大なのは、この信心の奥義である、「キリストは肉において現れ、霊において義とせられ、御使たちに見られ、諸国民の間に伝えられ、世界の中で信じられ、栄光のうちに天に上げられた」。

1 But the Spirit says expressly that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons, 1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 4:1 しかし、御霊は明らかに告げて言う。後の時になると、ある人々は、惑わす霊と悪霊の教とに気をとられて、信仰から離れ去るであろう。
2 through the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 4:2 それは、良心に焼き印をおされている偽り者の偽善のしわざである。

6 If you instruct the brothers of these things, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished in the words of the faith, and of the good doctrine which you have followed. 6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. 4:6 これらのことを兄弟たちに教えるなら、あなたは、信仰の言葉とあなたの従ってきた良い教の言葉とに養われて、キリスト・イエスのよい奉仕者になるであろう。
7 But refuse profane and old wives' fables. Exercise yourself toward godliness. 7 But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. 4:7 しかし、俗悪で愚にもつかない作り話は避けなさい。信心のために自分を訓練しなさい。
8 For bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things, having the promise of the life which is now, and of that which is to come. 8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 4:8 からだの訓練は少しは益するところがあるが、信心は、今のいのちと後の世のいのちとが約束されてあるので、万事に益となる。

13 Until I come, pay attention to reading, to exhortation, and to teaching. 13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 4:13 わたしがそちらに行く時まで、聖書を朗読することと、勧めをすることと、教えることとに心を用いなさい。
14 Don't neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the elders. 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. 4:14 長老の按手を受けた時、預言によってあなたに与えられて内に持っている恵みの賜物を、軽視してはならない。
15 Be diligent in these things. Give yourself wholly to them, that your progress may be revealed to all. 15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. 4:15 すべての事にあなたの進歩があらわれるため、これらの事を実行し、それを励みなさい。
16 Pay attention to yourself, and to your teaching. 1 Don't rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father; the younger men as brothers; 1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; 5:1 老人をとがめてはいけない。むしろ父親に対するように、話してあげなさい。若い男には兄弟に対するように、
2 the elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, in all purity. 2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. 5:2 年とった女には母親に対するように、若い女には、真に純潔な思いをもって、姉妹に対するように、勧告しなさい。

7 Also command these things, that they may be without reproach. 7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless. 5:7 これらのことを命じて、彼女たちを非難のない者としなさい。
8 But if anyone doesn't provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever. 8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. 5:8 もしある人が、その親族を、ことに自分の家族をかえりみない場合には、その信仰を捨てたことになるのであって、不信者以上にわるい。

10 being approved by good works, if she has brought up children, if she has been hospitable to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, and if she has diligently followed every good work. 10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. 5:10 また子女をよく養育し、旅人をもてなし、聖徒の足を洗い、困っている人を助け、種々の善行に努めるなど、そのよいわざでひろく認められている者でなければならない。
11 But refuse younger widows, for when they have grown wanton against Christ, they desire to marry; 11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry; 5:11 若いやもめは除外すべきである。彼女たちがキリストにそむいて気ままになると、結婚をしたがるようになり、
12 having condemnation, because they have rejected their first pledge. 12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. 5:12 初めの誓いを無視したという非難を受けねばならないからである。
13 Besides, they also learn to be idle, going about from house to house. Not only idle, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not. 13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. 5:13 その上、彼女たちはなまけていて、家々を遊び歩くことをおぼえ、なまけるばかりか、むだごとをしゃべって、いたずらに動きまわり、口にしてはならないことを言う。
14 I desire therefore that the younger widows marry, bear children, rule the household, and give no occasion to the adversary for insulting. 14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 5:14 そういうわけだから、若いやもめは結婚して子を産み、家をおさめ、そして、反対者にそしられるすきを作らないようにしてほしい。
15 For already some have turned aside after Satan. 15 For some are already turned aside after Satan. 5:15 彼女たちのうちには、サタンのあとを追って道を踏みはずした者もある。
16 If any man or woman who believes has widows, let them relieve them, and don't let the assembly be burdened; that it might relieve those who are widows indeed. 16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed. 5:16 女の信者が家にやもめを持っている場合には、自分でそのやもめの世話をしてあげなさい。教会のやっかいになってはいけない。教会は、真にたよりのないやもめの世話をしなければならない。
17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and in teaching. 17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 5:17 よい指導をしている長老、特に宣教と教とのために労している長老は、二倍の尊敬を受けるにふさわしい者である。
18 For the Scripture says, "You shall not muzzle the ox when it treads out the grain." And, "The laborer is worthy of his wages." 18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. 5:18 聖書は、「穀物をこなしている牛に、くつこをかけてはならない」また「働き人がその報酬を受けるのは当然である」と言っている。
19 Don't receive an accusation against an elder, except at the word of two or three witnesses. 19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. 5:19 長老に対する訴訟は、ふたりか三人の証人がない場合には、受理してはならない。
20 Those who sin, reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear. 20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. 5:20 罪を犯した者に対しては、ほかの人々も恐れをいだくに至るために、すべての人の前でその罪をとがむべきである。
21 I command you in the sight of God, and Christ Jesus, and the chosen angels, that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality. 21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. 5:21 わたしは、神とキリスト・イエスと選ばれた御使たちとの前で、おごそかにあなたに命じる。これらのことを偏見なしに守り、何事についても、不公平な仕方をしてはならない。
22 Lay hands hastily on no one, neither be a participant in other men's sins. Keep yourself pure. 22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure. 5:22 軽々しく人に手をおいてはならない。また、ほかの人の罪に加わってはいけない。自分をきよく守りなさい。
23 Be no longer a drinker of water only, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities. 23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities. 5:23 (これからは、水ばかりを飲まないで、胃のため、また、たびたびのいたみを和らげるために、少量のぶどう酒を用いなさい。)
24 Some men's sins are evident, preceding them to judgment, and some also follow later. 24 Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after. 5:24 ある人の罪は明白であって、すぐ裁判にかけられるが、ほかの人の罪は、あとになってわかって来る。
25 In the same way also there are good works that are obvious, and those that are otherwise can't be hidden. 25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid. 5:25 それと同じく、良いわざもすぐ明らかになり、そうならない場合でも、隠れていることはあり得ない。

1 Let as many as are bondservants under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, that the name of God and the doctrine not be blasphemed. 1 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. 6:1 くびきの下にある奴隷はすべて、自分の主人を、真に尊敬すべき者として仰ぐべきである。それは、神の御名と教とが、そしりを受けないためである。
2 Those who have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brothers, but rather let them serve them, because those who partake of the benefit are believing and beloved. Teach and exhort these things. 2 And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. 6:2 信者である主人を持っている者たちは、その主人が兄弟であるというので軽視してはならない。むしろ、ますます励んで仕えるべきである。その益を受ける主人は、信者であり愛されている人だからである。あなたは、これらの事を教えかつ勧めなさい。
3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine, and doesn't consent to sound words, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, 3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 6:3 もし違ったことを教えて、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの健全な言葉、ならびに信心にかなう教に同意しないような者があれば、
4 he is conceited, knowing nothing, but obsessed with arguments, disputes, and word battles, from which come envy, strife, insulting, evil suspicions, 4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 6:4 彼は高慢であって、何も知らず、ただ論議と言葉の争いとに病みついている者である。そこから、ねたみ、争い、そしり、さいぎの心が生じ、
5 constant friction of people of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.Withdraw yourself from such. 5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. 6:5 また知性が腐って、真理にそむき、信心を利得と心得る者どもの間に、はてしのないいがみ合いが起るのである。
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 6:6 しかし、信心があって足ることを知るのは、大きな利得である。
7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we certainly can't carry anything out. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 6:7 わたしたちは、何ひとつ持たないでこの世にきた。また、何ひとつ持たないでこの世を去って行く。
8 But having food and clothing, we will be content with that. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 6:8 ただ衣食があれば、それで足れりとすべきである。
9 But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as drown men in ruin and destruction. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 6:9 富むことを願い求める者は、誘惑と、わなとに陥り、また、人を滅びと破壊とに沈ませる、無分別な恐ろしいさまざまの情欲に陥るのである。
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 6:10 金銭を愛することは、すべての悪の根である。ある人々は欲ばって金銭を求めたため、信仰から迷い出て、多くの苦痛をもって自分自身を刺しとおした。
11 But you, man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 6:11 しかし、神の人よ。あなたはこれらの事を避けなさい。そして、義と信心と信仰と愛と忍耐と柔和とを追い求めなさい。
12 Fight the good fight of faith. Lay hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you confessed the good confession in the sight of many witnesses. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 6:12 信仰の戦いをりっぱに戦いぬいて、永遠のいのちを獲得しなさい。あなたは、そのために召され、多くの証人の前で、りっぱなあかしをしたのである。
13 I command you before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate testified the good confession, 13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; 6:13 わたしはすべてのものを生かして下さる神のみまえと、またポンテオ・ピラトの面前でりっぱなあかしをなさったキリスト・イエスのみまえで、あなたに命じる。
14 that you keep the commandment without spot, blameless, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ; 14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: 6:14 わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの出現まで、その戒めを汚すことがなく、また、それを非難のないように守りなさい。
15 which in its own times he will show, who is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 6:15 時がくれば、祝福に満ちた、ただひとりの力あるかた、もろもろの王の王、もろもろの主の主が、キリストを出現させて下さるであろう。
16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and eternal power. Amen. 16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. 6:16 神はただひとり不死を保ち、近づきがたい光の中に住み、人間の中でだれも見た者がなく、見ることもできないかたである。ほまれと永遠の支配とが、神にあるように、アァメン。
17 Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be haughty, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy; 17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 6:17 この世で富んでいる者たちに、命じなさい。高慢にならず、たよりにならない富に望みをおかず、むしろ、わたしたちにすべての物を豊かに備えて楽しませて下さる神に、のぞみをおくように、

20 Timothy, guard that which is committed to you, turning away from the empty chatter and oppositions of the knowledge which is falsely so called; 20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 6:20 テモテよ。あなたにゆだねられていることを守りなさい。そして、俗悪なむだ話と、偽りの「知識」による反対論とを避けなさい。
