1 The elder to Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth. 1 The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. 1:1 長老のわたしから、真実に愛している親愛なるガイオへ。
2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers. 2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. 1:2 愛する者よ。あなたのたましいがいつも恵まれていると同じく、あなたがすべてのことに恵まれ、またすこやかであるようにと、わたしは祈っている。
3 For I rejoiced greatly, when brothers came and testified about your truth, even as you walk in truth. 3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. 1:3 兄弟たちがきて、あなたが真理に生きていることを、あかししてくれたので、ひじょうに喜んでいる。事実、あなたは真理のうちを歩いているのである。
4 I have no greater joy than this, to hear about my children walking in truth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. 1:4 わたしの子供たちが真理のうちを歩いていることを聞く以上に、大きい喜びはない。
5 Beloved, you do a faithful work in whatever you accomplish for those who are brothers and strangers. 5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; 1:5 愛する者よ。あなたが、兄弟たち、しかも旅先にある者につくしていることは、みな真実なわざである。
6 They have testified about your love before the assembly. You will do well to send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, 6 Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: 1:6 彼らは、諸教会で、あなたの愛についてあかしをした。それらの人々を、神のみこころにかなうように送り出してくれたら、それは願わしいことである。
7 because for the sake of the Name they went out, taking nothing from the Gentiles. 7 Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. 1:7 彼らは、御名のために旅立った者であって、異邦人からは何も受けていない。
8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow workers for the truth. 8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth. 1:8 それだから、わたしたちは、真理のための同労者となるように、こういう人々を助けねばならない。
9 I wrote to the assembly, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, doesn't accept what we say. 9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. 1:9 わたしは少しばかり教会に書きおくっておいたが、みんなのかしらになりたがっているデオテレペスが、わたしたちを受けいれてくれない。
10 Therefore, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words. Not content with this, neither does he himself receive the brothers, and those who would, he forbids and throws out of the assembly. 10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church. 1:10 だから、わたしがそちらへ行った時、彼のしわざを指摘しようと思う。彼は口ぎたなくわたしたちをののしり、そればかりか、兄弟たちを受けいれようともせず、受けいれようとする人たちを妨げて、教会から追い出している。
11 Beloved, don't imitate that which is evil, but that which is good. He who does good is of God. He who does evil hasn't seen God. 11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God. 1:11 愛する者よ。悪にならわないで、善にならいなさい。善を行う者は神から出た者であり、悪を行う者は神を見たことのない者である。
12 Demetrius has the testimony of all, and of the truth itself; yes, we also testify, and you know that our testimony is true. 12 Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true. 1:12 デメテリオについては、あらゆる人も、また真理そのものも、証明している。わたしたちも証明している。そして、あなたが知っているとおり、わたしたちの証明は真実である。
13 I had many things to write to you, but I am unwilling to write to you with ink and pen; 13 I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee: 1:13 あなたに書きおくりたいことはたくさんあるが、墨と筆とで書くことはすまい。
14 but I hope to see you soon, and we will speak face to face. Peace be to you. The friends greet you.
