1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the assembly of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. 1:1 パウロとシルワノとテモテから、父なる神と主イエス・キリストとにあるテサロニケ人たちの教会へ。恵みと平安とが、あなたがたにあるように。

1 For you yourselves know, brothers, our visit to you wasn't in vain, 1 For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain: 2:1 兄弟たちよ。あなたがた自身が知っているとおり、わたしたちがあなたがたの所にはいって行ったことは、むだではなかった。
2 but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as you know, at Philippi, we grew bold in our God to tell you the Good News of God in much conflict. 2 But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention. 2:2 それどころか、あなたがたが知っているように、わたしたちは、先にピリピで苦しめられ、はずかしめられたにもかかわらず、わたしたちの神に勇気を与えられて、激しい苦闘のうちに神の福音をあなたがたに語ったのである。
3 For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in deception. 3 For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: 2:3 いったい、わたしたちの宣教は、迷いや汚れた心から出たものでもなく、だましごとでもない。
4 But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts. 4 But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. 2:4 かえって、わたしたちは神の信任を受けて福音を託されたので、人間に喜ばれるためではなく、わたしたちの心を見分ける神に喜ばれるように、福音を語るのである。
5 For neither were we at any time found using words of flattery, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness (God is witness), 5 For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness: 2:5 わたしたちは、あなたがたが知っているように、決してへつらいの言葉を用いたこともなく、口実を設けて、むさぼったこともない。それは、神があかしして下さる。
6 nor seeking glory from men (neither from you nor from others), when we might have claimed authority as apostles of Christ. 6 Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ. 2:6 また、わたしたちは、キリストの使徒として重んじられることができたのであるが、あなたがたからにもせよ、ほかの人々からにもせよ、人間からの栄誉を求めることはしなかった。
7 But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children. 7 But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: 2:7 むしろ、あなたがたの間で、ちょうど母がその子供を育てるように、やさしくふるまった。
8 Even so, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you, not the Good News of God only, but also our own souls, because you had become very dear to us. 8 So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us. 2:8 このように、あなたがたを慕わしく思っていたので、ただ神の福音ばかりではなく、自分のいのちまでもあなたがたに与えたいと願ったほどに、あなたがたを愛したのである。
9 For you remember, brothers, our labor and travail; for working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached to you the Good News of God. 9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God. 2:9 兄弟たちよ。あなたがたはわたしたちの労苦と努力とを記憶していることであろう。すなわち、あなたがたのだれにも負担をかけまいと思って、日夜はたらきながら、あなたがたに神の福音を宣べ伝えた。
10 You are witnesses with God, how holy, righteously, and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe. 10 Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe: 2:10 あなたがたもあかしし、神もあかしして下さるように、わたしたちはあなたがた信者の前で、信心深く、正しく、責められるところがないように、生活をしたのである。
11 As you know, we exhorted, comforted, and implored every one of you, as a father does his own children, 11 As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, 2:11 そして、あなたがたも知っているとおり、父がその子に対してするように、あなたがたのひとりびとりに対して、
12 to the end that you should walk worthily of God, who calls you into his own Kingdom and glory. 12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory. 2:12 御国とその栄光とに召して下さった神のみこころにかなって歩くようにと、勧め、励まし、また、さとしたのである。
13 For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe. 13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. 2:13 これらのことを考えて、わたしたちがまた絶えず神に感謝しているのは、あなたがたがわたしたちの説いた神の言を聞いた時に、それを人間の言葉としてではなく、神の言として―事実そのとおりであるが―受けいれてくれたことである。そして、この神の言は、信じるあなたがたのうちに働いているのである。
14 For you, brothers, became imitators of the assemblies of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus; for you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews; 14 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews: 2:14 兄弟たちよ。あなたがたは、ユダヤの、キリスト・イエスにある神の諸教会にならう者となった。すなわち、彼らがユダヤ人たちから苦しめられたと同じように、あなたがたもまた同国人から苦しめられた。
15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out, and didn't please God, and are contrary to all men; 15 Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: 2:15 ユダヤ人たちは主イエスと預言者たちとを殺し、わたしたちを迫害し、神を喜ばせず、すべての人に逆らい、
16 forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved; to fill up their sins always. 1 Therefore, when we couldn't stand it any longer, we thought it good to be left behind at Athens alone, 1 Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone; 3:1 そこで、わたしたちはこれ以上耐えられなくなって、わたしたちだけがアテネに留まることに定め、
2 and sent Timothy, our brother and God's servant in the Good News of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith; 2 And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith: 3:2 わたしたちの兄弟で、キリストの福音における神の同労者テモテをつかわした。それは、あなたがたの信仰を強め、
3 that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you know that we are appointed to this task. 3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto. 3:3 このような患難の中にあって、動揺する者がひとりもないように励ますためであった。あなたがたの知っているとおり、わたしたちは患難に会うように定められているのである。
4 For most certainly, when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we are to suffer affliction, even as it happened, and you know. 4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know. 3:4 そして、あなたがたの所にいたとき、わたしたちがやがて患難に会うことをあらかじめ言っておいたが、あなたがたの知っているように、今そのとおりになったのである。
5 For this cause I also, when I couldn't stand it any longer, sent that I might know your faith, for fear that by any means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor would have been in vain. 5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain. 3:5 そこで、わたしはこれ以上耐えられなくなって、もしや「試みる者」があなたがたを試み、そのためにわたしたちの労苦がむだになりはしないかと気づかって、あなたがたの信仰を知るために、彼をつかわしたのである。
6 But when Timothy came just now to us from you, and brought us glad news of your faith and love, and that you have good memories of us always, longing to see us, even as we also long to see you; 6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you: 3:6 ところが今テモテが、あなたがたの所からわたしたちのもとに帰ってきて、あなたがたの信仰と愛とについて知らせ、また、あなたがたがいつもわたしたちのことを覚え、わたしたちがあなたがたに会いたく思っていると同じように、わたしたちにしきりに会いたがっているという吉報をもたらした。
7 for this cause, brothers, we were comforted over you in all our distress and affliction through your faith. 7 Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith: 3:7 兄弟たちよ。それによって、わたしたちはあらゆる苦難と患難との中にありながら、あなたがたの信仰によって慰められた。
8 For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord. 8 For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord. 3:8 なぜなら、あなたがたが主にあって堅く立ってくれるなら、わたしたちはいま生きることになるからである。
9 For what thanksgiving can we render again to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sakes before our God; 9 For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God; 3:9 ほんとうに、わたしたちの神のみまえで、あなたがたのことで喜ぶ大きな喜びのために、どんな感謝を神にささげたらよいだろうか。
10 night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face, and may perfect that which is lacking in your faith? 10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith? 3:10 わたしたちは、あなたがたの顔を見、あなたがたの信仰の足りないところを補いたいと、日夜しきりに願っているのである。
11 Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you; 11 Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you. 3:11 どうか、わたしたちの父なる神ご自身と、わたしたちの主イエスとが、あなたがたのところへ行く道を、わたしたちに開いて下さるように。
12 and the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we also do toward you, 12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you: 3:12 どうか、主が、あなたがた相互の愛とすべての人に対する愛とを、わたしたちがあなたがたを愛する愛と同じように、増し加えて豊かにして下さるように。
13 to the end he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. 13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints. 3:13 そして、どうか、わたしたちの主イエスが、そのすべての聖なる者と共にこられる時、神のみまえに、あなたがたの心を強め、清く、責められるところのない者にして下さるように。

1 Finally then, brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, that you abound more and more. 1 Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. 4:1 最後に、兄弟たちよ。わたしたちは主イエスにあってあなたがたに願いかつ勧める。あなたがたが、どのように歩いて神を喜ばすべきかをわたしたちから学んだように、また、いま歩いているとおりに、ますます歩き続けなさい。
2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 2 For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. 4:2 わたしたちがどういう教を主イエスによって与えたか、あなたがたはよく知っている。
3 For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, 3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4:3 神のみこころは、あなたがたが清くなることである。すなわち、不品行を慎み、
4 that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; 4:4 各自、気をつけて自分のからだを清く尊く保ち、
5 not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don't know God; 5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: 4:5 神を知らない異邦人のように情欲をほしいままにせず、
6 that no one should take advantage of and wrong a brother or sister in this matter; because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified. 6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. 4:6 また、このようなことで兄弟を踏みつけたり、だましたりしてはならない。前にもあなたがたにきびしく警告しておいたように、主はこれらすべてのことについて、報いをなさるからである。
7 For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification. 7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. 4:7 神がわたしたちを召されたのは、汚れたことをするためではなく、清くなるためである。
8 Therefore he who rejects this doesn't reject man, but God, who has also given his Holy Spirit to you. 8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit. 4:8 こういうわけであるから、これらの警告を拒む者は、人を拒むのではなく、聖霊をあなたがたの心に賜わる神を拒むのである。
9 But concerning brotherly love, you have no need that one write to you. For you yourselves are taught by God to love one another, 9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. 4:9 兄弟愛については、今さら書きおくる必要はない。あなたがたは、互に愛し合うように神に直接教えられており、
10 for indeed you do it toward all the brothers who are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brothers, that you abound more and more; 10 And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; 4:10 また、事実マケドニヤ全土にいるすべての兄弟に対して、それを実行しているのだから。しかし、兄弟たちよ。あなたがたに勧める。ますます、そうしてほしい。
11 and that you make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, even as we instructed you; 11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; 4:11 そして、あなたがたに命じておいたように、つとめて落ち着いた生活をし、自分の仕事に身をいれ、手ずから働きなさい。
12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and may have need of nothing. 12 That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing. 4:12 そうすれば、外部の人々に対して品位を保ち、まただれの世話にもならずに、生活できるであろう。
13 But we don't want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don't grieve like the rest, who have no hope. 13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 4:13 兄弟たちよ。眠っている人々については、無知でいてもらいたくない。望みを持たない外の人々のように、あなたがたが悲しむことのないためである。
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 4:14 わたしたちが信じているように、イエスが死んで復活されたからには、同様に神はイエスにあって眠っている人々をも、イエスと一緒に導き出して下さるであろう。
15 For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left to the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 4:15 わたしたちは主の言葉によって言うが、生きながらえて主の来臨の時まで残るわたしたちが、眠った人々より先になることは、決してないであろう。
16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with God's trumpet. 17 then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. 1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you. 1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. 5:1 兄弟たちよ。その時期と場合とについては、書きおくる必要はない。
2 For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. 2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 5:2 あなたがた自身がよく知っているとおり、主の日は盗人が夜くるように来る。
3 For when they are saying, "Peace and safety," then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman; and they will in no way escape. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 5:3 人々が平和だ無事だと言っているその矢先に、ちょうど妊婦に産みの苦しみが臨むように、突如として滅びが彼らをおそって来る。そして、それからのがれることは決してできない。

5 You are all children of light, and children of the day. We don't belong to the night, nor to darkness, 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 5:5 あなたがたはみな光の子であり、昼の子なのである。わたしたちは、夜の者でもやみの者でもない。
6 so then let's not sleep, as the rest do, but let's watch and be sober. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 5:6 だから、ほかの人々のように眠っていないで、目をさまして慎んでいよう。
7 For those who sleep, sleep in the night, and those who are drunk are drunk in the night. 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 5:7 眠る者は夜眠り、酔う者は夜酔うのである。
8 But let us, since we belong to the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation. 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 5:8 しかし、わたしたちは昼の者なのだから、信仰と愛との胸当を身につけ、救の望みのかぶとをかぶって、慎んでいよう。
9 For God didn't appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 5:9 神は、わたしたちを怒りにあわせるように定められたのではなく、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって救を得るように定められたのである。

11 Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do. 11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. 5:11 だから、あなたがたは、今しているように、互に慰め合い、相互の徳を高めなさい。
12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you, 12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; 5:12 兄弟たちよ。わたしたちはお願いする。どうか、あなたがたの間で労し、主にあってあなたがたを指導し、かつ訓戒している人々を重んじ、
13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves. 5:13 彼らの働きを思って、特に愛し敬いなさい。互に平和に過ごしなさい。
14 We exhort you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be patient toward all. 14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. 5:14 兄弟たちよ。あなたがたにお勧めする。怠惰な者を戒め、小心な者を励まし、弱い者を助け、すべての人に対して寛容でありなさい。
15 See that no one returns evil for evil to anyone, but always follow after that which is good, for one another, and for all. 15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. 5:15 だれも悪をもって悪に報いないように心がけ、お互に、またみんなに対して、いつも善を追い求めなさい。
16 Rejoice always. 16 Rejoice evermore. 5:16 いつも喜んでいなさい。
17 Pray without ceasing. 17 Pray without ceasing. 5:17 絶えず祈りなさい。
18 In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you. 18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 5:18 すべての事について、感謝しなさい。これが、キリスト・イエスにあって、神があなたがたに求めておられることである。
19 Don't quench the Spirit. 19 Quench not the Spirit. 5:19 御霊を消してはいけない。
20 Don't despise prophesies. 20 Despise not prophesyings. 5:20 預言を軽んじてはならない。
21 Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good. 21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 5:21 すべてのものを識別して、良いものを守り、
22 Abstain from every form of evil. 22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. 5:22 あらゆる種類の悪から遠ざかりなさい。
23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 5:23 どうか、平和の神ご自身が、あなたがたを全くきよめて下さるように。また、あなたがたの霊と心とからだとを完全に守って、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの来臨のときに、責められるところのない者にして下さるように。
24 He who calls you is faithful, who will also do it. 24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. 5:24 あなたがたを召されたかたは真実であられるから、このことをして下さるであろう。
25 Brothers, pray for us. 25 Brethren, pray for us. 5:25 兄弟たちよ。わたしたちのためにも、祈ってほしい。
26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. 26 Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss. 5:26 すべての兄弟たちに、きよい接吻をもって、よろしく伝えてほしい。
27 I solemnly command you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the holy brothers. 27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren. 5:27 わたしは主によって命じる。この手紙を、みんなの兄弟に読み聞かせなさい。
