1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are in the Dispersion: Greetings. 1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. 1:1 神と主イエス・キリストとの僕ヤコブから、離散している十二部族の人々へ、あいさつをおくる。
2 Count it all joy, my brothers , when you fall into various temptations, 2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 1:2 わたしの兄弟たちよ。あなたがたが、いろいろな試錬に会った場合、それをむしろ非常に喜ばしいことと思いなさい。
3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 1:3 あなたがたの知っているとおり、信仰がためされることによって、忍耐が生み出されるからである。
4 Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 1:4 だから、なんら欠点のない、完全な、でき上がった人となるように、その忍耐力を十分に働かせるがよい。
5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. 5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 1:5 あなたがたのうち、知恵に不足している者があれば、その人は、とがめもせずに惜しみなくすべての人に与える神に、願い求めるがよい。そうすれば、与えられるであろう。
6 But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 1:6 ただ、疑わないで、信仰をもって願い求めなさい。疑う人は、風の吹くままに揺れ動く海の波に似ている。
7 For let that man not think that he will receive anything from the Lord. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 1:7 そういう人は、主から何かをいただけるもののように思うべきではない。
8 He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. 1:8 そんな人間は、二心の者であって、そのすべての行動に安定がない。
9 But let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position; 9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: 1:9 低い身分の兄弟は、自分が高くされたことを喜びなさい。
10 and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away. 10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. 1:10 また、富んでいる者は、自分が低くされたことを喜ぶがよい。富んでいる者は、草花のように過ぎ去るからである。
11 For the sun arises with the scorching wind, and withers the grass, and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in his pursuits. 11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. 1:11 たとえば、太陽が上って熱風をおくると、草を枯らす。そしてその花は落ち、その美しい姿は消えうせてしまう。それと同じように、富んでいる者も、その一生の旅なかばで没落するであろう。
12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him. 12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. 1:12 試錬を耐え忍ぶ人は、さいわいである。それを忍びとおしたなら、神を愛する者たちに約束されたいのちの冠を受けるであろう。
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God," for God can't be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 1:13 だれでも誘惑に会う場合、「この誘惑は、神からきたものだ」と言ってはならない。神は悪の誘惑に陥るようなかたではなく、また自ら進んで人を誘惑することもなさらない。
14 But each one is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 1:14 人が誘惑に陥るのは、それぞれ、欲に引かれ、さそわれるからである。
15 Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 1:15 欲がはらんで罪を生み、罪が熟して死を生み出す。
16 Don't be deceived, my beloved brothers. 16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 1:16 愛する兄弟たちよ。思い違いをしてはいけない。
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 1:17 あらゆる良い贈り物、あらゆる完全な賜物は、上から、光の父から下って来る。父には、変化とか回転の影とかいうものはない。
18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. 18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. 1:18 父は、わたしたちを、いわば被造物の初穂とするために、真理の言葉によって御旨のままに、生み出して下さったのである。
19 So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; 19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 1:19 愛する兄弟たちよ。このことを知っておきなさい。人はすべて、聞くに早く、語るにおそく、怒るにおそくあるべきである。
20 for the anger of man doesn't produce the righteousness of God. 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. 1:20 人の怒りは、神の義を全うするものではないからである。
21 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls . 21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 1:21 だから、すべての汚れや、はなはだしい悪を捨て去って、心に植えつけられている御言を、すなおに受け入れなさい。御言には、あなたがたのたましいを救う力がある。
22 But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 1:22 そして、御言を行う人になりなさい。おのれを欺いて、ただ聞くだけの者となってはいけない。
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror; 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 1:23 おおよそ御言を聞くだけで行わない人は、ちょうど、自分の生れつきの顔を鏡に映して見る人のようである。
24 for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 1:24 彼は自分を映して見てそこから立ち去ると、そのとたんに、自分の姿がどんなであったかを忘れてしまう。
25 But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom, and continues, not being a hearer who forgets, but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does. 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. 1:25 これに反して、完全な自由の律法を一心に見つめてたゆまない人は、聞いて忘れてしまう人ではなくて、実際に行う人である。こういう人は、その行いによって祝福される。
26 If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious while he doesn't bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man's religion is worthless. 26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. 1:26 もし人が信心深い者だと自任しながら、舌を制することをせず、自分の心を欺いているならば、その人の信心はむなしいものである。
27 Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. 27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. 1:27 父なる神のみまえに清く汚れのない信心とは、困っている孤児や、やもめを見舞い、自らは世の汚れに染まずに、身を清く保つことにほかならない。

1 My brothers, don't hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with partiality. 1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. 2:1 わたしの兄弟たちよ。わたしたちの栄光の主イエス・キリストへの信仰を守るのに、分け隔てをしてはならない。
2 For if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into yoursynagogue , and a poor man in filthy clothing also comes in; 2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; 2:2 たとえば、あなたがたの会堂に、金の指輪をはめ、りっぱな着物を着た人がはいって来ると同時に、みすぼらしい着物を着た貧しい人がはいってきたとする。
3 and you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing, and say, "Sit here in a good place;" and you tell the poor man, "Stand there," or "Sit by my footstool;" 3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: 2:3 その際、りっぱな着物を着た人に対しては、うやうやしく「どうぞ、こちらの良い席にお掛け下さい」と言い、貧しい人には、「あなたは、そこに立っていなさい。それとも、わたしの足もとにすわっているがよい」と言ったとしたら、
4 haven't you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? 4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? 2:4 あなたがたは、自分たちの間で差別立てをし、よからぬ考えで人をさばく者になったわけではないか。
5 Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn't God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him? 5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? 2:5 愛する兄弟たちよ。よく聞きなさい。神は、この世の貧しい人たちを選んで信仰に富ませ、神を愛する者たちに約束された御国の相続者とされたではないか。
6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Don't the rich oppressyou, and personally drag you before the courts? 6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? 2:6 しかるに、あなたがたは貧しい人をはずかしめたのである。あなたがたをしいたげ、裁判所に引きずり込むのは、富んでいる者たちではないか。
7 Don't they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called? 7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? 2:7 あなたがたに対して唱えられた尊い御名を汚すのは、実に彼らではないか。
8 However, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well. 8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: 2:8 しかし、もしあなたがたが、「自分を愛するように、あなたの隣り人を愛せよ」という聖書の言葉に従って、このきわめて尊い律法を守るならば、それは良いことである。
9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors. 9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. 2:9 しかし、もし分け隔てをするならば、あなたがたは罪を犯すことになり、律法によって違反者として宣告される。
10 For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. 2:10 なぜなら、律法をことごとく守ったとしても、その一つの点にでも落ち度があれば、全体を犯したことになるからである。
11 For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not commit murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. 2:11 たとえば、「姦淫するな」と言われたかたは、また「殺すな」とも仰せになった。そこで、たとい姦淫はしなくても、人殺しをすれば、律法の違反者になったことになる。
12 So speak, and so do, as men who are to be judged by a law of freedom. 12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. 2:12 だから、自由の律法によってさばかるべき者らしく語り、かつ行いなさい。
13 For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. 13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. 2:13 あわれみを行わなかった者に対しては、仮借のないさばきが下される。あわれみは、さばきにうち勝つ。
14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him? 14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 2:14 わたしの兄弟たちよ。ある人が自分には信仰があると称していても、もし行いがなかったら、なんの役に立つか。その信仰は彼を救うことができるか。
15 And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food, 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 2:15 ある兄弟または姉妹が裸でいて、その日の食物にもこと欠いている場合、
16 and one of you tells them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled;" and yet you didn't give them the things the body needs, what good is it? 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 2:16 あなたがたのうち、だれかが、「安らかに行きなさい。暖まって、食べ飽きなさい」と言うだけで、そのからだに必要なものを何ひとつ与えなかったとしたら、なんの役に立つか。
17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself. 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 2:17 信仰も、それと同様に、行いを伴わなければ、それだけでは死んだものである。
18 Yes, a man will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 2:18 しかし、「ある人には信仰があり、またほかの人には行いがある」と言う者があろう。それなら、行いのないあなたの信仰なるものを見せてほしい。そうしたら、わたしの行いによって信仰を見せてあげよう。
19 You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 2:19 あなたは、神はただひとりであると信じているのか。それは結構である。悪霊どもでさえ、信じておののいている。
20 But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead? 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 2:20 ああ、愚かな人よ。行いを伴わない信仰のむなしいことを知りたいのか。
21 Wasn't Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 2:21 わたしたちの父祖アブラハムは、その子イサクを祭壇にささげた時、行いによって義とされたのではなかったか。
22 You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected; 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 2:22 あなたが知っているとおり、彼においては、信仰が行いと共に働き、その行いによって信仰が全うされ、
23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness;" and he was called the friend of God. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 2:23 こうして、「アブラハムは神を信じた。それによって、彼は義と認められた」という聖書の言葉が成就し、そして、彼は「神の友」と唱えられたのである。
24 You see then that by works, a man is justified, and not only by faith. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. 2:24 これでわかるように、人が義とされるのは、行いによるのであって、信仰だけによるのではない。
25 In like manner wasn't Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way? 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? 2:25 同じように、かの遊女ラハブでさえも、使者たちをもてなし、彼らを別な道から送り出した時、行いによって義とされたではないか。
26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead. 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. 2:26 霊魂のないからだが死んだものであると同様に、行いのない信仰も死んだものなのである。

1 Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment. 1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 3:1 わたしの兄弟たちよ。あなたがたのうち多くの者は、教師にならないがよい。わたしたち教師が、他の人たちよりも、もっときびしいさばきを受けることが、よくわかっているからである。
2 For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn't stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. 2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3:2 わたしたちは皆、多くのあやまちを犯すものである。もし、言葉の上であやまちのない人があれば、そういう人は、全身をも制御することのできる完全な人である。
3 Indeed, we put bits into the horses' mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 3:3 馬を御するために、その口にくつわをはめるなら、その全身を引きまわすことができる。
4 Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 3:4 また船を見るがよい。船体が非常に大きく、また激しい風に吹きまくられても、ごく小さなかじ一つで、操縦者の思いのままに運転される。
5 So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest! 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 3:5 それと同じく、舌は小さな器官ではあるが、よく大言壮語する。見よ、ごく小さな火でも、非常に大きな森を燃やすではないか。
6 And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire byGehenna. 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 3:6 舌は火である。不義の世界である。舌は、わたしたちの器官の一つとしてそなえられたものであるが、全身を汚し、生存の車輪を燃やし、自らは地獄の火で焼かれる。
7 For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 3:7 あらゆる種類の獣、鳥、這うもの、海の生物は、すべて人類に制せられるし、また制せられてきた。
8 But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 3:8 ところが、舌を制しうる人は、ひとりもいない。それは、制しにくい悪であって、死の毒に満ちている。
9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 3:9 わたしたちは、この舌で父なる主をさんびし、また、その同じ舌で、神にかたどって造られた人間をのろっている。
10 Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 3:10 同じ口から、さんびとのろいとが出て来る。わたしの兄弟たちよ。このような事は、あるべきでない。
11 Does a spring send out from the same opening fresh and bitter water? 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 3:11 泉が、甘い水と苦い水とを、同じ穴からふき出すことがあろうか。
12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water. 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. 3:12 わたしの兄弟たちよ。いちじくの木がオリブの実を結び、ぶどうの木がいちじくの実を結ぶことができようか。塩水も、甘い水を出すことはできない。
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom. 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. 3:13 あなたがたのうちで、知恵があり物わかりのよい人は、だれであるか。その人は、知恵にかなう柔和な行いをしていることを、よい生活によって示すがよい。
14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and don't lie against the truth. 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 3:14 しかし、もしあなたがたの心の中に、苦々しいねたみや党派心をいだいているのなら、誇り高ぶってはならない。また、真理にそむいて偽ってはならない。
15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 3:15 そのような知恵は、上から下ってきたものではなくて、地につくもの、肉に属するもの、悪魔的なものである。
16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 3:16 ねたみと党派心とのあるところには、混乱とあらゆる忌むべき行為とがある。
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 3:17 しかし上からの知恵は、第一に清く、次に平和、寛容、温順であり、あわれみと良い実とに満ち、かたより見ず、偽りがない。
18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. 3:18 義の実は、平和を造り出す人たちによって、平和のうちにまかれるものである。

1 Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don't they come from your pleasures that war in your members? 1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 4:1 あなたがたの中の戦いや争いは、いったい、どこから起るのか。それはほかではない。あなたがたの肢体の中で相戦う欲情からではないか。
2 You lust, and don't have. You kill, covet, and can't obtain. You fight and make war. You don't have, because you don't ask. 2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 4:2 あなたがたは、むさぼるが得られない。そこで人殺しをする。熱望するが手に入れることができない。そこで争い戦う。あなたがたは、求めないから得られないのだ。
3 You ask, and don't receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures. 3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 4:3 求めても与えられないのは、快楽のために使おうとして、悪い求め方をするからだ。
4 You adulterers and adulteresses, don't you know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 4:4 不貞のやからよ。世を友とするのは、神への敵対であることを、知らないか。おおよそ世の友となろうと思う者は、自らを神の敵とするのである。
5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously"? 5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 4:5 それとも、「神は、わたしたちの内に住まわせた霊を、ねたむほどに愛しておられる」と聖書に書いてあるのは、むなしい言葉だと思うのか。
6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 4:6 しかし神は、いや増しに恵みを賜う。であるから、「神は高ぶる者をしりぞけ、へりくだる者に恵みを賜う」とある。
7 Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 4:7 そういうわけだから、神に従いなさい。そして、悪魔に立ちむかいなさい。そうすれば、彼はあなたがたから逃げ去るであろう。
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 4:8 神に近づきなさい。そうすれば、神はあなたがたに近づいて下さるであろう。罪人どもよ、手をきよめよ。二心の者どもよ、心を清くせよ。
9 Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to gloom. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 4:9 苦しめ、悲しめ、泣け。あなたがたの笑いを悲しみに、喜びを憂いに変えよ。
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. 4:10 主のみまえにへりくだれ。そうすれば、主は、あなたがたを高くして下さるであろう。
11 Don't speak against one another, brothers. He who speaks against a brother and judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge. 11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. 4:11 兄弟たちよ。互に悪口を言い合ってはならない。兄弟の悪口を言ったり、自分の兄弟をさばいたりする者は、律法をそしり、律法をさばくやからである。もしあなたが律法をさばくなら、律法の実行者ではなくて、その審判者なのである。
12 Only one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge another? 12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another? 4:12 しかし、立法者であり審判者であるかたは、ただひとりであって、救うことも滅ぼすこともできるのである。しかるに、隣り人をさばくあなたは、いったい、何者であるか。
13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow let's go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit." 13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 4:13 よく聞きなさい。「きょうか、あす、これこれの町へ行き、そこに一か年滞在し、商売をして一もうけしよう」と言う者たちよ。
14 Whereas you don't know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 4:14 あなたがたは、あすのこともわからぬ身なのだ。あなたがたのいのちは、どんなものであるか。あなたがたは、しばしの間あらわれて、たちまち消え行く霧にすぎない。
15 For you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that." 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. 4:15 むしろ、あなたがたは「主のみこころであれば、わたしは生きながらえもし、あの事この事もしよう」と言うべきである。
16 But now you glory in your boasting. All suchboasting is evil. 16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. 4:16 ところが、あなたがたは誇り高ぶっている。このような高慢は、すべて悪である。
17 To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn't do it, to him it is sin. 17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. 4:17 人が、なすべき善を知りながら行わなければ、それは彼にとって罪である。

1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming on you. 1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. 5:1 富んでいる人たちよ。よく聞きなさい。あなたがたは、自分の身に降りかかろうとしているわざわいを思って、泣き叫ぶがよい。
2 Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten. 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. 5:2 あなたがたの富は朽ち果て、着物はむしばまれ、
3 Your gold and your silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be for a testimony against you, and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up your treasure in the last days. 3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. 5:3 金銀はさびている。そして、そのさびの毒は、あなたがたの罪を責め、あなたがたの肉を火のように食いつくすであろう。あなたがたは、終りの時にいるのに、なお宝をたくわえている。
4 Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies . 4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. 5:4 見よ、あなたがたが労働者たちに畑の刈入れをさせながら、支払わずにいる賃銀が、叫んでいる。そして、刈入れをした人たちの叫び声が、すでに万軍の主の耳に達している。
5 You have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure. You have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter. 5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. 5:5 あなたがたは、地上でおごり暮し、快楽にふけり、「ほふらるる日」のために、おのが心を肥やしている。
6 You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous one. He doesn't resist you. 6 Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you. 5:6 そして、義人を罪に定め、これを殺した。しかも彼は、あなたがたに抵抗しない。
7 Be patient therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it, until it receives the early and late rain. 7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. 5:7 だから、兄弟たちよ。主の来臨の時まで耐え忍びなさい。見よ、農夫は、地の尊い実りを、前の雨と後の雨とがあるまで、耐え忍んで待っている。
8 You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. 5:8 あなたがたも、主の来臨が近づいているから、耐え忍びなさい。心を強くしていなさい。
9 Don't grumble, brothers, against one another, so that you won't be judged. Behold, the judge stands at the door. 9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. 5:9 兄弟たちよ。互に不平を言い合ってはならない。さばきを受けるかも知れないから。見よ、さばき主が、すでに戸口に立っておられる。
10 Take, brothers, for an example of suffering and of patience, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. 5:10 兄弟たちよ。苦しみを耐え忍ぶことについては、主の御名によって語った預言者たちを模範にするがよい。
11 Behold, we call them blessed who endured. You have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the Lord in the outcome, and how the Lord is full of compassion and mercy. 11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. 5:11 忍び抜いた人たちはさいわいであると、わたしたちは思う。あなたがたは、ヨブの忍耐のことを聞いている。また、主が彼になさったことの結末を見て、主がいかに慈愛とあわれみとに富んだかたであるかが、わかるはずである。
12 But above all things, my brothers, don't swear, neither by heaven, nor by the earth, nor by any other oath; but let your "yes" be "yes," and your "no," "no;" so that you don't fall into hypocrisy. 12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. 5:12 さて、わたしの兄弟たちよ。何はともあれ、誓いをしてはならない。天をさしても、地をさしても、あるいは、そのほかのどんな誓いによっても、いっさい誓ってはならない。むしろ、「しかり」を「しかり」とし、「否」を「否」としなさい。そうしないと、あなたがたは、さばきを受けることになる。
13 Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praises. 13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 5:13 あなたがたの中に、苦しんでいる者があるか。その人は、祈るがよい。喜んでいる者があるか。その人は、さんびするがよい。
14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 5:14 あなたがたの中に、病んでいる者があるか。その人は、教会の長老たちを招き、主の御名によって、オリブ油を注いで祈ってもらうがよい。
15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 5:15 信仰による祈は、病んでいる人を救い、そして、主はその人を立ちあがらせて下さる。かつ、その人が罪を犯していたなら、それもゆるされる。
16 Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective. 16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. 5:16 だから、互に罪を告白し合い、また、いやされるようにお互のために祈りなさい。義人の祈は、大いに力があり、効果のあるものである。
17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it didn't rain on the earth for three years and six months. 17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. 5:17 エリヤは、わたしたちと同じ人間であったが、雨が降らないようにと祈をささげたところ、三年六か月のあいだ、地上に雨が降らなかった。
18 He prayed again, and the sky gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. 5:18 それから、ふたたび祈ったところ、天は雨を降らせ、地はその実をみのらせた。
19 Brothers, if any among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; 5:19 わたしの兄弟たちよ。あなたがたのうち、真理の道から踏み迷う者があり、だれかが彼を引きもどすなら、
20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins. 20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. 5:20 かように罪人を迷いの道から引きもどす人は、そのたましいを死から救い出し、かつ、多くの罪をおおうものであることを、知るべきである。
